| If you guessed that this was a Great Blue Heron you would be wrong. This is a Yellow Crowned Night Heron that I recently (April 2001) photographed on a remote section of the Current River. Part of the enjoyment of fishing is just being in the remote beautiful environments where fish take us to observe nature.
Although these herons are fairly common in the southern marshes, up until recently they were hardly ever observed in our Ozark streams. I understand that the yellow in their crowns is much more prevalent during their mating season.
I photographed the bird using my 35mm point and shoot that I always carry with me while fishing. The lens zooms out to 70mm which helped get the photograph but what out really helped was the fact that the bird slowly and cautiously worked up the stream bank behind me while I was fishing in mid-stream. |
